On this day in 1787, delegates to the Federal Convention in Philadelphia signed their names to a written constitution designed to safeguard the natural rights of the American people.

Leaving the convention hall, Benjamin Franklin was asked by a woman whether the delegates had created a republic or a monarchy. Franklin responded, “A republic, ma’am — if you can keep it!”
